Eyelid Surgery in Korea

Eyelid Surgery

The eyes are one of the most distinctive and important features of the human being. There is a saying that the eyes are the windows of one’s soul. In Asia, especially in Korea, the popularity of cosmetic eyelid surgery has soared in the last two decades. Exposure to Western culture, fashion and style has been one of the main catalysts fueling the desire for larger and more prominent looking eyes. In particular, the double eyelid surgery has become one of the most requested common aesthetic surgeries for Asian women. As the Korean locals have urged on in pursuing beauty, surgeons have also developed relentless amounts of sophisticated surgical methods in order to keep up. The high Korean beauty standard has developed Korea’s aesthetic market to become the beauty hub of Asia and beyond.

Perhaps what distinguishes Korean plastic surgery from other country's plastic surgery is the eyelid surgery. In the past two decades, South Korean plastic surgeons have fiercely competed with one another for new techniques in pursuit of natural-looking double eyelids. If you are an Asian looking to have the eyelid surgery, South Korea is the right destination. Plastic surgeons within Korea have great understanding for not only beauty standards within Asia, but around the globe. Their rich experience in various types of eyelid surgeries will help understand your specific concerns and cases, and eventually allow you to reach your aesthetic goal!

Understanding the 3 basic Double Eyelid Surgery Methods

Understanding the three basic surgery methods for the eyelid is essential. The three basic methods consist of the full incision, partial incision, and embedding (non-incision) method. These methods would be found in nearly all Korean clinics, although there may be a slight vary in surgical techniques used in the practice of surgery. Information about these basic surgical methods is available in many internet sites and search engines. However, it is difficult to determine the exact status of your eyes as a non-professional, and to identify the pros and cons of each surgical method that best fit your eyes. Visiting a clinic and meeting a doctor without any preparation may cause confusion and is not recommended. K-Doctors is here to help you out from primitive on-line consultation to practical advising of your medical trip with profession.

How Do I Find The Right Clinic and Doctor?

It is not easy to find the right clinic and doctor suitable for your taste. Even though it is important to understand the difficult information about surgical methods of the double eyelid surgery, each doctor has his or her own unique surgical style and suggestions due to their own aesthetic decision. One clinic may suggest eye contouring while other doctors might suggest the opposite. There are doctors who suggest full incision while others might suggest partial incision methods.

In deciding the right doctor, the method is not the most essential factor. It is better to look into the experience of a doctor and the reliability of the medical clinic itself. When consulting with a doctor, medical staff member, or with us, selecting one or two of your aesthetic goals and explaining them step by step in a logical manner greatly helps out. There are many cases where having one or two surgical methods according to the status of your eyes are successful instead of having anterior and posterior epicanthoplasty, upper blepharoplasty, and eye contouring surgeries.

K-Doctors, with team members who have immense experience in this field, is here to help out your needs. We know which doctors can help you out and which clinics are most suitable for you. We have our own beauty consultants who have more than 7 years experience in well-known prestigious clinics. Most of all, we have an immense network within the Korean aesthetic medical field. Incision

Eyelid Surgery

The double eyelid line is made by an incision in the top skin layer of the eyes. The skin is cut off where the double-eyelid line should be. It is a suitable method for those whose eyelids are saggy. By cutting of the skin, muscle or fat, according to each patient, this method certainly makes the eyes more prominent than the non-incision method. The surgical process will take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour with local anesthesia. However, for each case the surgery time will differ.

Who is it Recommended For?

  1. 1. For those who possess thick eyelids
  2. 2. For those who have droopy eyelids or have eyelashes that constantly irritate the eyes
  3. 3. For those who have firm eyelids and have rare possibilities of unraveling after surgery

Features of the Incision Method

The incision method creates permanent double eyelids and is applicable for all eyelid skin types. Any sagging skin, muscles, or even the angle of the eyelashes can all be corrected with this surgical procedure. Scars may be seen afterwards, but barely noticeable. Thus it has become one of the most popular choices for blepharoplasty, double eyelid surgery.

Partial Incision

Eyelid Surgery

The partial incision method consists of a combination of the incision method and non-incision method. For the usual case, only 2mm to 3mm are cut off, removing the fat at the same time during the surgical process. It has a low possibility for the double eyelids to unfold or become loose. Another advantage of the partial incision method is that there will be no scars remaining after a few months of the surgery. The reason for this is because only a small part of the skin is cut off.

Who is it Recommended For?

  1. 1. For those who have excessive fat on eyelids
  2. 2. For those who require revision surgery after non-incisional surgery
  3. 3. For those who wish to remove fat and muscle tissue from their eyelids
  4. 4. For those who want double eyelids with minimal scarring and swelling

Features of the Partial Incision Method

The possibility of scars being seen surely goes down since only a small part of the skin is cut off. Also, swelling subsides more quickly than the incision method. Removing unnecessary skin fat or muscle can also be done with this procedure. A natural and beautiful double eye-lid line can be expected according to which doctor proceeds the surgery.

Non-Incision

Eyelid Surgery

The non-incision blepharoplasty surgery method is carried out only through 2 to 4 small punctuating holes. There is no incision involved. No incision means that there are no scars left at all once the eyes are all healed after surgery. Another advantage is that there is no need for stitch removal and the swelling subsides much more quickly compared to the incision method. However, the downside for this method is that the double-eyelids may unravel according to each patient’s skin status and eye opening habits.

Who is it Recommended For?

  1. 1. For those who do not have double eyelids
  2. 2. For those who have eyelids that are not excessively thick or droopy
  3. 3. For those who want fast results
  4. 4. For those who want almost no scarring and swelling
  5. 5. For those who are reluctant to incisions

Features of the Non-Incision Method

The non-incision method is commonly known as the ‘pinch method’. However, there are several different applications of proceeding with this surgery. Each method takes individual’s unique eye shape into account before going through with the operation. The Natural Adhesive Method, Multi-Suture Method, Simple Non-Incision Method, and Traditional Non-Incision Method are the main types. However, names of the methods may vary from clinic to clinic and doctor to doctor.

Ptosis Correction

What is Ptosis Correction?

The aim of surgery is to treat the ptosis by lifting up the drooping eyelids back to its normal position. This is usually done by tightening the muscles that contract when raising the eyelids. If ptosis is severe, the eyelid can be conjoined under the eyebrow, and allow the forehead muscles to raise the eyelid.
Mild ptosis may cause the eyelid to slightly droop, which can affect appearance but have no significant impact on one’s vision. However, severe ptosis can cause vision impairments by blocking the upper region of the eyes. This will eventually end up in causing fatigue to the eyes and even visional problems if severe. Like the double eyelid surgery there are 2 method of surgery types of which can be conducted. The Incision and Non-Incision are the 2 methods for the Ptosis Correction surgery. Ptosis Correction may also be referred to as the Levator Surgery.

Eyelid Surgery

Operation Methods

Incisional Ptosis Correction

Eyelid Surgery

Incisional Ptosis Correction is a type of blepharoplasty that creates incision lines across the surface of the eyelids to correct the shape and size. This procedure is usually performed to correct thick eyelids with excessive adipose tissues, or to correct sagging & droopy eyelids. Incising skin and strengthening the muscle that open the eyes will make the pupil more well-defined.

Who is it Recommended For?

  1. 1. For those who have upper eyelids covering their eyes
  2. 2. For those who have tired looking eyes
  3. 3. For those who have half opened eyes

Features of the Ptosis Correction Incision Method

The muscles involved in opening or lifting the eyelids can become weak, causing the eyelids to partially cover up the eyes. Ptosis Correction can modify this by incision of the levator muscle used to open the eyes. Ptosis Correction by using the Incision or Non-incision method will be determined upon consultation based on the patient's requirements.
With the Ptosis Correction, one’s eyes will be able to look clear and bright. Squinting eyes can be corrected. Another advantage is that the thick looking eyelids become slimmer and more natural.

Non-Incisional Ptosis Correction

Eyelid Surgery

The muscles involved in opening or lifting the eyelids can become weak which cause the eyelids to partially cover the eyes. Ptosis Correction can correct this by incising or suturing the levator muscle used to open the eyes. Droopy upper eyelids may cause a tired looking appearance and forcefully opening the eyes may cause wrinkles on the forehead. Ptosis Correction through the Incision or Non-incision method will be determined upon consultation based on the patient's requirements.

Who is it Recommended For?

  1. 1. For those who have half-closed eye appearances.
  2. 2. For those who have minute change or dissatisfaction even after having double eyelid surgery
  3. 3. For those who desire to have clear and vivid pupils.

Features of the Ptosis Correction Non-Incision Method

The Non-Incision method is recommended for those with minimal to moderate ptosis with relatively thin upper eyelids. This procedure does not use incision, but instead uses minute openings to correct the muscles and eyelid. It can be performed alone or together with non-incisional double eyelid procedures to create a natural crease without any scarring. The advantages of this method are short downtime, no scarring and natural results.

Canthoplasty

Also known as extension surgery to the eyes, Canthoplasty surgery’s goal is to enlarge the width and height of one’s eyes with a single operation by adjusting shapes and height of the eye corners. There are two main categories in the Canthoplasty surgery method; Epi-canthoplasty and Lateral Canthoplasty.

Eyelid Surgery

Epicanthoplasty

Eyelid Surgery

A small section of the eyelid that covers the inner corner of the eye, often referred to as the 'Mongolian Fold', generally makes the eyes look distantly apart from one another. Epicanthoplasty can increase the length of the eyes to make them look much wider, clearer, and larger. It can also portray a softer and kinder looking feature. Patients often combine Epicanthoplasty in conjunction with double eyelid surgery for better satisfactory outcomes.

Who is it Recommended For?
